Gangsters and Goliaths came out three months after Kingdom of Monsters started and instantly restored my faith in IDW. John Layman’s take on the Godzilla universe is a seamless blend of Showa and Heisei, fleshing out certain elements while taking the story in a direction the genre has seldom seen since the days of Dogora. We follow a police officer whose investigations into the dealings of a Tokyo crime family have earned him an execution on Monster Island - but he cheats death and returns to Tokyo with the Elias. Despite their warnings, he then holds them hostage to manipulate Mothra into quenching his thirst for justice.
Unlike Tokyo SOS, the twins aren’t bluffing. Tokyo, you’ve got a big storm coming.
Though Godzilla has a sizable role, this is very much a Mothra book, but it’s quite a fresh take on Toho’s second-favorite kaiju. I’m going to avoid too many spoilers, because this miniseries is available on Kindle and paperback and you should all buy it. My only complaints are that Alberto Ponticelli’s humans can be a bit on the terrifying side, and that said cast is (Shobijin aside) almost completely male.
